Family, friends, parties, great food, festive drinks, decking the halls, cookie baking (and testing), shopping for the perfect gifts, staying up late watching the Hallmark Channel … the list goes on! The Holidays are one of the most wonderful times of the year, but they can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. It is easy to put healthy eating and exercise on the backburner when we are prioritizing all of our fun activities and feel pressure to fit in all of the traditions on our list. So, how can we make the holidays healthier? Here are my 6 Holiday Health for maintaining a healthy routine from Thanksgiving to New Years (and beyond).

How to Keep a Healthy Routine During the Holiday Season

Family, friends, parties, great food, festive drinks, decking the halls, cookie baking (and testing), shopping for the perfect gifts, staying up late watching the Hallmark Channel … the list goes on!

The Holidays are one of the most wonderful times of the year, but they can also be one of the most stressful times of the year. It is easy to put healthy eating and exercise on the backburner when we are prioritizing all of our fun activities and feel pressure to fit in all of the traditions on our list.

So, how can we make the holidays healthier? Here are my 6 Holiday Health Tips for maintaining a healthy routine from Thanksgiving to New Years (and beyond).

6 Holiday Health Tips for a Healthier You

1) Find ways to reduce stress.

Stress can increase significantly this time of year. When stress increases, cortisol levels increase, which often make you feel hungrier and can promote fat storage. A few examples of things that can help reduce stress are practicing deep breathing, meditation, visualization, yoga or Pilates. You can also try to reduce stress with many types of therapy such as massage therapy, music therapy and aromatherapy.

2) Keep nutrition in mind.

This is a given. What we put into our bodies is what we get out of our bodies. During the holidays, we often overindulge in good food, drinks and sugary treats. Now, I am a firm believer in the saying “everything in moderation”, however, when we fill our bodies with empty calories it is important to replace them with nutrient-packed supplements. A couple of my favorite go-to’s include: Multivitamin, Omega 3, and Trebiotic.

3) Go for a walk outside.

During the holidays we are constantly breathing in stale and stagnant air indoors that can weaken our immune system. Going on a walk outside to get some fresh air, soak up vitamin D from the sun, and do some light exercise can energize you, boost your immunity and make you feel like a brand new person even when it’s cold outside. Bundle up, move your body, and I promise you’ll be glad you did!

4) Drink plenty of water.

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! It is important to drink plenty of water, even in the cooler winter months. A good rule of thumb is to shoot for drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water per day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, drink 75 ounces of water per day. Don’t enjoy plain water? Try infusing your water with different fruits, vegetables and herbs. Here is my favorite water infusion recipe, and I love these delicious GO packets too!

5) Start your mornings with movement.

When the weather gets colder, all we want to do is stay snuggled in our nice, warm bed. Getting up to start the day can feel like a chore and exercise is often the last thing on our minds! Instead of hitting the snooze button, make an effort to get up and get moving to get your day started on the right foot! Aim for at least 20 minutes of activity daily for movement and a burst of energy to get you through your holiday plans.

6) Get consistent and enough sleep.

Sleep directly affects your mood and energy levels. When we are not getting enough sleep, or even consistent sleep, we can feel stress, anxious, irritable, and low-energy. During the holidays, our schedules are jam-packed with festive activities, extra holiday to-do’s, on top of our everyday tasks and schedules. It is easy to get out of a good sleep routine, and even lose hours of sleep while we are having fun. Aim for consistency with your sleep schedule. Go to bed at the same time and wake up and the same time every day, even on the weekends! Do you get the “Sunday Scaries” like me and cannot quiet your mind because you’re thinking about the week ahead? Sleep Health calms the mind and body helping you naturally fall asleep and stay asleep.
