How Pilates Transforms Your Body From the Core Out

Pilates is a system of low-impact exercises designed to move your body from the core out – improving upon strength, endurance, stability and flexibility. This system of movement was devised by Joseph Pilates, in which his original work became known as “Contrology.” Pilates originated with classical exercises performed on the floor, known as “mat work”. Beginning on the floor in a supine position relieves pressure on the joints and strains on the heart, and this allows for safe movement from the start. Mat work exercises are the foundation of Pilates and are an integral part of all Pilates programming. They are incredibly challenging due to the fact that they un-assisted and require complete control.

Pilates Is for Every Body

Pilates has now become widely embraced by athletes, the injured and anyone looking to increase mindful movement. Pilates exercise programs can be easily modified for beginners to experts depending on each person’s unique experience level and abilities. It is truly shaping the fitness industry and offers plenty of benefits to your body, no matter your fitness background!

Pilates helps to stretch, strengthen and balance the body with the practice of specific core-based exercises and breathing patterns. It teaches balance, control, coordination and precise body movements that carry through into our everyday lives. Pilates is a full-body exercise method that develops a deeper connection to our core and helps you to do everything better!

Learn from a Certified Pilates Expert

Because of its growing popularity, there are many fitness classes around the world proclaiming to be Pilates classes, but unfortunately are not true Pilates classes whatsoever. These so-called “Pilates classes” are actually teaching a random series of exercises put together, and they are not of the intentional balanced sequence developed by Joseph Pilates. This is why it is so important to learn from a certified Pilates expert. You can read about my professional experiences and certifications here!

I love Pilates too, and you’re in luck! I teach BOTH live “Reformer” Pilates and Mat Pilates Classes. I would love for you to join me if you’d like! My “Pilates Strong Classes” are a reformer Pilates strength training workout, using resistance bands! These classes are a total-body circuit workout inspired by exercises you would typically find done on the Pilates reformer. Hi Wendy! Absolutely! I agree, I think you should give Pilates a try also. Pilates balances the body and actually INCREASES flexibility! Modifications can be done to tailor the movements and exercises to meet you at your level when you first start out. This will help you to gradually increase flexibility and to reach your goals at a pace that best suits you. Flexibility will increase naturally with regular practice of Pilates. Please reach out to me, I would love to help you get started on your Pilates journey!

So great there’s another impactful option that works, while being more gentle on my knees. I’m only just getting started , and I wish I’d started years ago, would saved my knees.

Oh, do I feel you, Charity! Prior to my experience in the health & fitness world, I was a Sales Manager and Buyer. Working in an office incorporated unhealthy habits into my life, and I began dealing with so much knee and back pain at the age of 23! Pilates has changed my life and helped eliminate so much of the back and knee pain I was dealing with. I love to help those dealing with pain, like I was, feel better and find a way to move their bodies that feels good! I am so glad that you have now started your Pilates journey to help with the knee pain you are experiencing – it only gets better from here!

I did pilates religiously every week 4 years ago until my fibromyalgia got the best of me, I’m trying to get back in the groove. I have good days and bad days but I’m trying my best.

As I get older I’m looking for something that works my core in a gentler way than many aerobic exercises require. I may have found the answer in Pilates.

  3. Layna Lee

  5. Emily

I’ve loved pilates since university and can’t wait to start using pilates again to improve my strength and fitness once I’m home from hospital!

  6. Kim M.

Pilates is one of those things that I’ve been telling myself for many years I “should” be doing. But at this point in my life after being at home full time for the past year due to the pandemic I am the most out of shape I’ve been in my entire life. I’ve always thought of Pilates as something I need to be in moderately good shape to attempt, otherwise it will just be miserable. But reading about all the benefits and having the option of doing sessions in the privacy of my own home – with no need to feel embarrassed if I can’t do a whole lot in the beginning – makes me excited to finally give it a try!

  7. Michelle Peterson

I love pilates but have not done it since the studio near me relocated. I would love to introduce it to my daughter. We have been clearing out an area in our home to make room. I can not wait for her to join me and us start taking zoom classes!

  10. Christina D

I’ve always had a soft spot for Pilates. My mom and I used to do a Pilates workout on DVD every night together when I was younger. Good times…

  11. Joanna

    Pilates has changed my life!
I used to hate any type of exercise but pilates has really give me a massive confidence boost!
I can’t wait to see what this year brings

  12. Jennifer Raska

I am new to pilates and find myself absolutely in love. As a stay at home mom of three little ones all 5 and under,I never have anytime for myself. This gives me “mommy time” and the ability to work on my body and self.

  13. Mia Evans

I like that you pointed out that private pilates could be modified for beginners and experts depending on the unique needs of our bodies. Since I have an issue with my right knee, I hope that the professional trainer that I will find will create a routine for me that will not affect that part of my leg. I just want to finally lose weight without that much impact on my knees, because I don’t want to get injured.
