Can you believe it? It’s December 1st! The most wonderful time of year is here — and the most busy!
While I am so excited for the holiday season, our holidays are looking very non-traditional this year. I’ve been describing our Thanksgiving as “a good, exhausting, circus” to everyone that asks. We usually spend Thanksgiving in town, low key, with my family. But this year, we traveled to Wisconsin to be with my husband’s side for a wedding. Which meant a 7 hour drive one way, a 4.5 day weekend with the kids, and lots of running here and there! I was thankful to have seen lots of family we haven’t visited with for a very long time and for a safe holiday weekend full of traveling. Will you be traveling this holiday season?
Black Friday and Cyber Monday came and went, and my big purchase for the kids was an outdoor kids roller coaster toy (pictured below), which I know will be used a lot inside this winter. Hopefully no holes will end up in our walls! What was your big purchase or deal this year if you’ve done some shopping?
I had to get a lot of my Christmas shopping done early because we are celebrating with my family the first weekend in December, as my parents will be headed to Arizona until May. This year, we are flying down on Christmas Day to visit them for a week! And this also means we will not be doing Christmas with Grant’s family until January, when we will also get to meet our newest niece or nephew! … Like I said, very non-traditional holiday plans for 2023!
A little update on my anxiety — I had a good stretch in October when Grant’s mom was here visiting, but as soon as she left I spiraled. It came creeping back in daily and I was having major meltdowns. I was feeling anxious, agitated, and incredibly moody anytime I was around the kids. I was also flipping out over the little things. One night at my parents house, I absolutely lost my shit over spilt water and had a complete meltdown. That is when I made the call and said it is time for medication.
I have been taking anxiety medication for three weeks now, and I am noticing a huge difference. I actually want to be around my kids, be in mom-mode, and do all the things with my kids. I have an incredible amount of patience now and I haven’t lost it once since starting the medication. That is saying a lot, considering the thought of even traveling with the kids sent me into a complete spiral. Looking back, I have been struggling with anxiety for a long time before I recognized it, or that it got to a place where it was showing up daily. I know I won’t be needing medication forever, but for the time being it has helped me tremendously to be a better, more present, kind and loving mother. And that is what is most important right now.
A side effect that I am noticing from the medication is insomnia. I wanted to exhaust all other natural options first to see if I could manage my anxiety on my own. This included trying therapy, CBD, yoga, meditation, birth control, and in the end they all helped, but it was not enough for my anxiety personally (everyone is different).
I was so hesitant on taking medication because I felt like a fraud. I am a certified Pilates health and fitness professional teaching breathwork and body awareness to help others feel good, and the fact that I am not in a place of feeling peace myself didn’t feel right. But I am so glad I finally gave the medication a chance because right now it is necessary for me and I also know it’s temporary.
If you have been struggling with anxiety personally, as a mother, or for any other reason and have been questioning medication, you are not alone! Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions. I always want to remind you to do what is best for you and your family and not worry about the outside world. Taking care of you is top priority!
