Hey Pilates Queens!
You know the one thing I’m really terrible at? Resting. Allowing my mind to rest, my life to be present. Not being productive. And I’m not talking about sleeping, but actually resting and letting my mind be still.
I have experienced something recently that put me in a complete anxiety attack, caused my mind to run a million miles an hour, and actually had me fearing for me and my family’s safety. It really put me into a crash and burn, fight or flight, crying my eyes out, doubting everything sort of state. I was trying to do everything to fix and solve the situation that was caving on my husband and me. This unfortunate event pushed me into practicing the one thing that I actually SUCK at: Rest.
I have always said that it is a good trait to be a go-getter who never sits down… but, is it really? I always wonder why I am so horrible at rest. Was it a trait I was born with? Did it come from being the youngest child in my family by 10 years? Was it caused by being a multi-sport athlete in school who never sat on the sidelines? Did it stem from growing up with the rise of technology and social media? What exactly perpetuated this side of me?
A part of me wonders if it’s a combination of: (1) Loving work. I find so much joy and excitement in helping other women feel their best self by teaching Pilates, creating content, building at-home workouts. I just love being busy doing what I am passionate about. And, (2) The other part of me that observes other powerful, strong women becoming “Boss Babes” and wants to walk right alongside them in their successes.
I tend to find myself saying two common quotes: “Fake it till you make it!”, and, “You can sleep when you’re dead!” I am literally creating NO time for myself to rest and I constantly feel like I have to outlast competitors and beat the system (the good ole social media algorithm).
I honestly feel scared to rest. In my head, I tell myself, “If you rest, then you’ll never finish the race”. I am truly scared to rest because it feels like I’ll lose my alignment, my focus. To me, rest feels like giving up. But, I’m now learning that there are unexplained events, consequences, or mental burnout that will inevitably force my body and mind to rest if I don’t take the time on my own.
Does rest feel hard for you too? Do you have a hard time tucking your phone away? Is it challenging to leave your email or text message inbox alone for a few days? Me too! You’re not alone. Due to the unforeseen events that took place recently, I am forcing myself to rest my mind daily. This is a self-care practice that is worth fighting for to avoid hitting mental burnout. I truly believe everything happens for a reason, and this might have been my “sign” to rest before I hit burn out.
Here are 3 ways I plan on practicing rest, self-care, and being present in my life over the next 3 weeks:
I will be stepping away from all platforms (except YouTube) for 2 weeks straight. No posting, no scrolling. I will actually be removing the apps from my phone to be able to truly rest my mind with no temptations, notifications, and social media distractions.
This will look different every day for me, but a few things I have already dabbled into are hypno-breathing, sitting in stillness, and meditation to calm my mind, body and spirit while practicing being in the present.
This might be a small act of self-care, like enjoying a cup of coffee on my front porch, sitting by my pool to take in the beauty and calm of being present by water, or meeting a friend for a walk. It could also be something bigger and planned out, like a massage, facial, or my personal favorite, acupuncture and cupping.
I encourage you to join me in finding a single day each week for rest or a small act of daily self-care. I challenge you to make a bigger change for a longer period of time, like a couple week social media break. Schedule it in and guard it with your life! Don’t let anything steal your time to rest. Show yourself love and kindness by resting.
My hope for myself is to learn how to rest. I hope it will feed and fuel me to continue to love and live the life I’m creating. ✨
