Tips for Building a Clean Skincare Routine
Switching to clean skincare products doesn’t have to feel overwhelming or expensive, I promise. When I first started, I thought I’d have to toss out every product under my bathroom sink and spend a fortune replacing them all at once. That idea alone made me want to quit before I even began. But over time, I learned that small swaps make the biggest difference. Here’s what worked for me (and what I recommend if you’re just starting out):
Start with simple swaps
Don’t throw everything away. Instead, replace one product at a time as you finish what you have. That’s how I started—my first swap was my face wash. When I ran out, I chose a clean, sulfate-free cleanser. Then I moved on to my moisturizer, then sunscreen, and so on. Over the course of a few months, my whole routine was transformed without the sticker shock of buying it all at once.
Read ingredient labels (without going crazy)
I used to get totally lost in the ingredient list. It felt like reading a different language! Now I just check for a few keywords: “paraben-free,” “phthalate-free,” “fragrance-free,” and “sulfate-free.” Those alone cut out a lot of the junk.
I also use the Yuka app, which lets you scan a product’s barcode and instantly see how safe the ingredients are, plus suggestions for cleaner alternatives. It makes shopping for clean skincare products so much less overwhelming.
Match your skin type
This one is huge. I have combination skin that leans sensitive, so products with heavy oils or harsh exfoliants were always a disaster for me. Clean skincare doesn’t mean one-size-fits-all. Brands now have amazing options tailored for oily, dry, sensitive, or acne-prone skin.
Bonus tip: Give it time
This was the hardest part for me. When I switched to clean skincare, I wanted overnight results. But just like with fitness, consistency matters more than quick fixes. Your skin might take a few weeks to adjust, especially if you’re moving away from harsher products. Stick with it, and you’ll start to see the payoff. Eventually you’ll have calmer, more radiant skin that feels good without makeup.
